Tips for Creating Bright Shots

1. If you want to photograph people on stage, but your flash can't reach a long distance

Usually, at an event, if you want to get a clear and bright photo, it will be blocked by a considerable distance from the object you want to take.

You can fix this by increasing the lighting because the light from the flash will spread and the farther it is from your object the weaker the light will be. You can increase the ISO so that the camera sensor is more sensitive to light. It is recommended not to slow down the shutter speed because moving objects require a fast shutter speed.

EOS 600D/ EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM/ FL: 70mm (112mm equivalent)/Shutter-priority AE (f/4.1/200 sec, EV +2)/ ISO 800/ WB: Auto/ Speedlite 580EX II/ E-TTL mode (Flash exposure compensation: EV+0.3)

In this photo, ISO 800 is used and exposure compensation EV+2. Photos become brighter and the model's skin looks brighter. You need to pay attention to increasing the ISO so as not to cause noise in the photo. The latest camera models use newer technology so they can reduce noise in photos.

Distance A is approximately 5 meters.

2. Photographing faces with light that is too bright and there are harsh shadows on the subject

Usually in very bright lighting, it will cause harsh shadows.

The solution is that you can increase the ISO to 800, and use a reflector to reflect light on the model's face. In addition, you can use EV+1.3 light compensation and EV+2 flash compensation.

EOS 7D/ EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM/ FL: 97mm (155mm equivalent)/Shutter-priority AE (f/4, 1/125 sec, EV+1.3)/ ISO 800/WB: Auto/ Speedlite 580EX II/ E-TTL mode (Flash exposure compensation: EV+2)

A's distance is approximately 3 meters.

3. Photograph brightly colored objects from a distance

For example, you are in the open air and want to photograph birds that are quite far away but the lighting conditions are not suitable. You can use a flash but it will produce less natural images.

You can still use your flash light by lowering the flash compensation to EV-0.3. Apart from that, you can increase the ISO to help the image look brighter. This photo uses ISO 1000, so the colors of the bird can be captured clearly.

EOS 50D/ EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM/ Aperture-priority AE (f/5, 1/200 sec, EV-0.7)/ ISO 1000/ WB: Auto/ Speedlite 580EX/ E-TTL mode (Flash exposure compensation: EV-0.3)
