Chiaroscuro Photography Tips (Part 2)

2. Don't leave food waiting

Principles you need to know when photographing food:

a. Photos when the food is still fresh, just cooked. The longer you leave it, the more unappealing the food will look.

b. Work quickly. Taking photos of food while it is hot, emitting smoke or cold food before it melts will add flavor to your photos.

Prepare everything before the food is ready. Arrange the food arrangement, the right lighting so that when the food is ready, you can immediately take photos. Do a few experiments first before the food comes out so that you get the right settings that you want. You can use the help of a tripod to keep the camera in place and you don't need to adjust the lighting, aperture or focus point again.

Previous preparation is not only the lighting and position of the dark reflector but also the placement of the ice cream cone. With the help of a tripod, you can keep the camera in the same place. So when everything is ready, you just scoop the ice cream and immediately take photos.

3. The shine on the food is appetizing

If done correctly, you can make your food photos look tempting.

a. Consider the lighting angle as this is important. Determine the lighting angle you want to take then shoot diagonally from above the subject.

b. Keep the shine to a minimum. For the shining area, make sure it's only around 20-30% of the food because it can affect the results of the photo and make your photo look overdone.

c. It is recommended to use a focal length of 70mm, not too wide because it can distort objects so they look unnatural.
