Photographing Moving Objects

To photograph moving objects, of course you have to play with shutter speed. Shutter speed is fast or slow, it all depends on the photo you want to produce, there is no right or wrong. You can use shutter priority mode to make it easier.

1. Super fast movement

The faster the movement you want to freeze, the faster the shutter speed required. For example, for the movement of people surfing, use a shutter speed of up to 1/5000 second because the surfer moves very fast and the photographer is on a boat which is also moving closer, so both are moving. Set the camera in shutter priority mode, auto ISO and continuous focus, set the shutter speed to 1/5000.

2. Slower movements

For movements that are not as fast as surfing, for example people who are jogging. You just need to use a shutter speed of around 1/400. Especially if your position is still, don't move.

You need to pay attention when freezing movement:

  1. The speed of the photo subject, the faster it is, the faster the shutter speed used
  2. The photographer's speed to the subject. If the photographer moves closer, the required shutter speed is faster.
  3. Subject distance. The closer the subject is to the photographer, the faster the shutter speed required
  4. Lens focal length, the longer the focal lens used, the faster the shutter speed required
